Theory & Practical Tests
Theory Test
You may take your theory test from the age of 17years old and you must pass this test before you can book your practical driving test.
The theory test consists of two sections, both of which must be passed at the same occasion.
- A series of multiple choice questions which tests your knowledge primarily on the Highway Code. You must correctly answer at least 43 out of 50.
- A hazard perception test which tests your ability to identify possible developing hazards on video clips, as quickly as possible. You must score at least 44 out of 75.
Practical Test
On the day of your test it is normal to have a short lesson before the test which helps to settle any nerves and to get you driving comfortably.
At the test centre before the test begins, the examiner will ask you two “show me / tell me” questions...I will cover these during lessons before the test.
The test lasts approx 40minutes and you will be asked to perform two of the three manoeuvres:
- A reverse parking exercise
- A turn in the road
- A left-hand reverse around a corner
The examiner may also ask you to perform an emergency stop exercise.
To help prepare for your test you will carryout a “mock test” during lessons which will help you to get used to driving test conditions.
Practice and preparation is the key to passing your driving test.
The Official DSA guide to Learning To Drive book explains the complete syllabus or check the DSA website for full information, books, software etc. You can also book your theory and practical tests online here.
